Kauai Day 4

We woke up Saturday intending to go first thing to Waimea Canyon.  Julie had been up all night having pain in her big toe so we arranged to go to a mobile doctor.  The mobile doctor was amazing and diagnosed Julie’s problem and gave her some antibiotic medicine and ointment.

The toenail on the left ended up falling off. Notice how the one on the left was about double the size.

We then continued straight to Waimea Canyon (Kauai’s Grand Canyon).  We took the old Waimea Canyon Highway up which was a neat drive.  There are several overlooks on the way up that are worth stopping at.  We got to the Awa’awa’puhi trailhead at around 11:00 and started the hike.

The hike was 3 miles down in fairly muddy conditions.  We lucked out when we got to the overlook of the Na Pali coast because the fog and mist cleared enough for us to get some good views of the canyons and the ocean below (Julie had said a prayer that we would have a chance to see the view and shortly after, it cleared up)  The hike back up was pretty tiring but it was well worth it.  Very neat hike. Julie’s toe was huge by this point, but she was a real trooper and toughed it out.

We headed back down the canyon to Waimea for some dinner.  Porky’s was closed so we had to get burgers at Da Booze shop.  They were decent.  We headed west to watch the sunset on the beach at Kekaha Beach Park.  It was beautiful.
